A Perfect Day Vol. 2: Portland’s Historic Woodlawn District

By Aryne + Dulcinea, May 29, 2018

Portland’s Historic Woodlawn District long served as one of northeast’s best kept secrets. Its tucked away nature left it overlooked by newcomers and tourists for decades, but the area is finally gaining prominence. Established in the 1860s, the Woodlawn neighborhood is the oldest to be settled in the former city of Albina, which later consolidated into Portland. In 1888, the addition of a railroad stimulated the district’s economy, transforming the rural farm community into a commercial destination. Its historic charm prevails today, with several noteworthy institutions every Portlander should explore. For a perfect day in Portland’s Historic Woodlawn District, check out these attractions.

MORNING
Your first stop of the day will be at the central Woodlawn Coffee & Pastry. A community staple since 2010, this establishment serves up mouthwatering pastries. In addition, they have a heartier selection of breakfast and lunch items, which include traditional breakfast foods, sandwiches, and cocktails. You’ll enjoy your preferred fuel in a beautifully lit space, surrounded by locals.Portland's Historic Woodlawn District Woodlawn Park

From here, you’ll want to head east on Dekum to reach Woodlawn Park. In line with the laidback pacing of Woodlawn, don’t hurry to get there. Instead, take some time to examine the local street art and appreciate the impressive greenery. Depending on time of year, the park can take on many forms. Warm summer months bring an onslaught of activity, with people enjoying the parks’ sport fields, amphitheater, and water play area. During the fall, Woodlawn Park embodies a different of magic, as fog from the Columbia weaves through old growth trees.

AFTERNOON
When was the last time you felt truly luxurious? The team of The Portland Girl are pros at accomplishing exactly that. After a relaxing stroll through Woodlawn Park, stop in for a facial, sugaring session, or light treatment. Utilizing all eco-friendly materials, this top-rated skin care establishment will leave you glowing.

Leaving The Portland Girl, head southwest on Oneonta Street to get back to the Dekum triangle, which provides an ample selection of lunch options. If you’re feeling up to a brew, stop in at The Oregon Public House. Operating as a Public Benefit Nonprofit, this pub donates its proceeds to Portland-area non-profits. For an alternative option to pub fare, head east half of a mile to reach Tamale Boy where the ambiance is always warm and the Mexican street food is legendary. On your way back to the Dekum Triangle, stop off at Celandine Vintage to scan through a curated selection of vintage clothing and homewares.

EVENING
Woodlawn is coming into its own, but remains a quieter neighborhood in terms late-night activities. Local haunts include Breakside Brewing and Good Neighbor Pizzeria, which both hit the spot in terms of late-night dining. Directly across the street, Firehouse offers a different ambiance, serving wood-fired European cuisine in the historic former firehouse. However, if you’re still full from Tamale Boy, Green Army Tavern is your best move. Craft cocktails and a menu that features ample small plate options make this neighborhood newcomer a great place to wind down.
