Historians believe ancient Mesopotamians invented the wheel about 3500BC. And not even a locomotive wheel, but a potter’s wheel. It probably took another 300 years to flip it up on its side and locomotor about with it. A truly human idea – there really is no naturally occurring equivalent. No wonder it took nearly 5,ooo years for someone to figure out that wheels could be put on feet.
And just like that, capital F fun was found.
And it rocked. And it rolled.
(Ironically, rock and roll wouldn’t be invented for quite a while after that.)
So basic an idea, but what a game changer.
We even considered roller-skates for our soldiers in the Great Wars, as an alternative to wheeled troop-transports – wheeled troops transporting themselves. Maybe it was the inescapable joy burbling up autonomic smile responses and inadvertent shouts of “Wheeeeeeeeeeee!” that caused the powers-that-be to abandon the program. Or maybe it was the mud.
And is that why roller-skates have remained in the realm of frivolity and fun and not used for harder utilitarian ends? Does that very act of skating trigger something deep within us that speaks to our lighter and more adventurous selves? Ignoring the practical for the ephemeral. Listening to our inner grasshopper instead of our nagging ant.
We lace up and trip the light fantastic on gleaming, polished floors. We rise above our primitive and primeval urges to embrace the wanderlust of our souls floating through the ether. To glide from the mundane into the extraordinary.
Or maybe its just that old familiar playlist we’ve know for years. Or maybe its the nachos.

In my spare time I enjoy running and playing soccer.
